Caltrops was originally released on June 23, 1999 with the release of the Urza's Destiny Magic The Gathering edition. This card has since been reprinted in 2 sets, with 2 artists contributing to the various card designs.

With the release of the Seventh Edition version of Caltrops on April 2, 2001, The flavortext on Caltrops was modified to read: The Eastern Paladin knew how highly his southern rival valued horses, so he gleefully prepared a suitable welcome.
